"Cheapest," the third installment of the "Inexpensive Trilogy" (after "Cheap" and "Cheaper") ups the ante on the theme of doing tricks. The dancers challenge the limits of their strength and flexibility with feats from contortion acts, yogic competitions, acrobatics, and hula hoop twirling. When the dancers get stuck in oddly twisted ways, it's only through collaborative pretzelling, that they can worm free. Michelle Ferranti's colorfully-striped unitards enhance the choreography's tangled shapes.
Jody Sperling (Artistic Director, Time Lapse Dance) is a dancer, choreographer, and dance scholar based in New York City. Her choreography is often inspired by vintage sources; especially the fin de siècle spectacles of modern-dance pioneer Loie Fuller, about whom Sperling has researched and lectured extensively. Sperling's work has been seen at many local venues, in other US and Canadian cities, and in Yaroslavl, Russia. Sperling writes for Dance Magazine and has contributed to other publications including, The Village Voice and the six-volume International Encyclopedia of Dance. She also has an interest in aerial dance and has studied, and made dances for, low-flying trapeze
